Last Day Of June Is Free On The Epic Games Store

Last Day of June, a story-driven puzzle game from developer Ovosonico, is available for free on the Epic Games Store (it's normally listed as $19.99 on the online retailer). Don't wait too long, though — it's only a freebie until July 4.

This puzzle game puts you in the shoes of an elderly man who desperately wants to change a traumatic past event. Thanks to a bit of magic, he gets that opportunity, and you help him rearrange history through puzzles. You play through a time loop of that fateful day in hopes of creating a new future.

I reviewed Last Day of June when it released back in 2017, and thought it told an endearing story but was held back by its repetitive nature. You can read the entire review here.

Hideo Kojima's upcoming Death Stranding looks to be graphically impressive, but what if that same concept was translated into something more lo-fi? YouTuber Bearly Regal tested this idea by envisioning Death Stranding as a PS1 game.

The result is several gameplay and cinematic scenes transformed into a PS1 era aesthetic, and it actually looks pretty cool. Take a look for yourself below.

Dreams Review – Bringing Your Imagination To Life

Whether you're a Minecraft builder, a Sims 4 player with an architect's eye, or a level creator in Super Mario Maker, several video games provide creation suites for innovative players.

Sometimes the building aspect is the game's biggest selling point, such as with Dreams, and other times it's a well-thought out addition like Far Cry 5's Arcade Mode. Either way, it feels like there's something out there for anyone who wants to add their personal touch.

I've been hot and cold on building mechanics; some click with me while others don't. Lately I've been getting back into building homes and community lots in the Sims 4, as well as throwing my hat into Dreams once more to go deeper with the creation tools. I'm also hoping to get my hands on Super Mario Maker 2 soon.

So, what about you? Are you a builder or a creative type? Or do you prefer experiencing the custom-made creations of others? I love discovering and playing through the weird stuff people make in Dreams, so I totally understand if you fall into the latter category.

Fresh off his move to the Los Angeles Lakers, dominant big man Anthony Davis makes his second appearance on the cover of NBA 2K. A six-time NBA all-star and three-time All-NBA First Teamer, Davis has the resume of a repeat cover athlete. His teaming up with LeBron James in Los Angeles should only increase his profile.

“I’m honored to be back representing NBA 2K,” Davis said in a press statement. “Being picked as the face of NBA 2K20 means the world to me, and I’m excited for the fans to experience the best sports simulation in the world this fall.”

Given the months of rumors pointing to Davis leaving the New Orleans Pelicans, the NBA 2K20 covers smartly hide the team jersey:

Remedy Has Publishing Rights For Alan Wake

Sure, Control is nearly here but that hasn't stopped Remedy from looking to the future – and it appears that at least part of the company's future is rooted in the past. For years, a loyal group of fans have clamored for an another sequel (not counting Alan Wake's American Nightmare) to the Twin Peaks-inspired Alan Wake, and it appears they might just get it.

The company announced today that it now owns the publishing rights for Alan Wake. Creative Director Sam Lake himself confirmed the news on Twitter

Whether this pans out to Remedy simply receiving profits for what's already out there as far as Alan Wake is concerned or an actual sequel remains to be seen. However, the fact that a sequel now exists within the realm of possibility is likely to put a twisted smile on the faces of Mr. Scratch devotees.

Ni No Kuni Sequel On The Way With Plans To Expand The Franchise

After two games console titles, a few mobile Japanese titles, an endorsement from Studio Ghibli, and a feature film on the way, the Ni No Kuni franchise is doing well. An interview with Level-5 president Akahiro Hino confirms that the Ni No Kuni library will continue to grow with no sign of stopping.

Japanese magazine Nikkei talked with Hino about the upcoming Ni No Kuni news, including a sequel. The next title is planned to release sometime after the premiere of the Ni No Kuni anime film. The film, which so far has no announced plans to be released in the West, will release to Japanese theaters on August 29th. While Studio Ghibli was involved in the cutscene animation and art direction for Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, the prolific studio has no involvement with the film. Frequent Ghibli collaborator and composer Joe Hisashi is scoring the film, however. The film looks good, and holds true to the original art style, as seen in the new trailers.

We know nothing about the Ni No Kuni sequel other than its post-August release window. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is also being ported to the Switch with a September 20th release date, which should hold fans over until more information on the sequel is released.

Hino also mentioned a smartphone app related to Ni No Kuni with no release date. Two mobile Ni No Kuni games already exist, but they are both exclusive to Japan with no plans to bring them to the West. We have no word on what the app will do, or if it is even going to be available in the West.

Despite news of one of Telltale's hits slowly disappearing from storefronts, Skybound still knows the worth of the series that put the studio on the map. Rather than keeping each season separate, Skybound is collecting all four seasons and DLC together in a definitive edition to be sold both physically and digitally for $49.99.

Some interesting additions that come with the definitive series includes the "graphic black" style that allows you to play every episode with this distinct look more true to the comic-book style it was based off, more than 10 hours of developer commentary, art galleries, and over 140 music tracks.

Paradox Interactive Calls Traditional 70/30 Revenue Split 'Outrageous' For Video Games

$

0

At a Gamelab panel last week, Paradox Interactive's Fredrick Wester spoke on a largely unchanged revenue model: the 70/30 split. Developers keep 70 percent of a game's revenue, and the platform holders – Valve, Microsoft, Sony, Apple, Nintendo, and others – keep the remaining 30 percent. However, with the rise of digital sales and the Epic Games Store's more favorable 88/12 split, Wester believes the model is outdated.

"I think the 70/30 revenue split is outrageous," Wester said. "I think the platform holders are taking too much money. Everyone in the press here, just quote me on that."

Wester detailed how Warner Bros. established the 70/30 split in the 1970s as a precedent, back when they released films on VHS and when video games were very much in their infancy. With today's increasingly digitized methods of content distribution, Wester claims this model is outdated.

The Epic Games Store has challenged that model with its more generous 88/12 revenue split, which has attracted many developers to release their games on the store as opposed to Steam. While favorable to developers, however, consumers have been frustrated with the store's lack of options and features present in Steam.

Now, Wester and others are challenging other platform holders to match Epic's revenue model.

"When the competition is low, the platform holder can get a big share of the pie; as competition increases, they need to lower their part of the pie, as well," Wester said. "That's how the market works, right?"

CD Projekt Red Working On Two More Cyberpunk 2077 Projects

$

We're less than a year out from Cyberpunk 2077, a game which seemed perennially years away its entire existence. The open-world RPG is poised to be the biggest game to ever come from Polish studio CD Projekt Red, even bigger than the massive Witcher 3. It makes sense, then, that CD Projekt wants more than one bite at that apple and appear to have multiple Cyberpunk projects in development.

The news comes from Polish news outlet Bankier, which wrote a story about how Cyberpunk 2077 preorders are above what Witcher 3 hit prior to its release. Within the story, CDPR president Adam Kiciński mentioned that they currently have three teams working on Cyberpunk 2077 projects. One is the actual Cyberpunk 2077 game we have all seen, a second game is a multiplayer standalone spinoff based on Cyberpunk 2077. They didn't hint at what that might be, but battle royale seems like a pretty fair bet.

The third project is their next big game, which one would guess is a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. It is not necessarily that, however, as CDPR has said they also consider Gwent and its single-player campaign to be a large-scale project, as well. Again, were I to bet, I'd put my money on production of a sequel being in its beginning stages already.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases on April 16 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Sony Announces Another PlayStation Vue Price Hike

Following the upward trajectory of Hulu with Live TV, DirecTV Now, YouTube TV, and Sling, PlayStation Vue is the latest streaming service to raise prices. Citing rising costs of content licenses, Sony announced the $5 price hike across all its Vue bundles.

PlayStation Vue’s cheapest plan, called Access, now costs $49.99 a month, while the most expensive Ultra package now sets you back $84.99 a month. Sony says the change starts today for new customers, but existing customers will keep their current price for at least 30 days and will see the new price beginning on their first billing cycle on or after July 31. The only silver lining is for hockey fans – the plans will soon include the NHL Network and ACC Network.

The price hike is just the latest for PlayStation Vue, which raised its service price $10 in 2017 and another $5 last year.

EA Announces Madden NFL 20 Rookie Ratings

It's the doldrums of July, which means one thing for Madden fans – ratings reveals. Today, EA Tiburon shared the full ratings for all the prospects selected in the 2019 NFL Draft. Some of the decisions may surprise you.

The highest-rated rookie of the bunch? That honor belongs to New York Jets defensive tackle Quentin Williams. The third overall selection lands with a solid 80 rating. The best quarterback rating unsurprisingly goes to mobile wonder Kyler Murray, drafted first overall by the Arizona Cardinals.

The player earmarked for the biggest bust potential is unsurprisingly New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who lands with an unimpressive 63 overall despite being picked sixth overall. The biggest riser was Seahawks receiver D.J. Metcalf, who came in with the eighth highest rating despite being the last pick in the second round. Another player to vault well above his draft position is Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr., who is the tenth highest rated rookie.

In the new trailer for Jumanji: The Next Level, the original cast of Jack Black, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan return as video game avatars, but the cast is being padded with some new additions. Danny DeVito and Danny Glover are joining the cast as grandfathers of the kids who are stuck in the game, but wait, there's more.

The trailer shows Danny DeVito and Danny Glover getting sucked into the game along with the kids, inhabiting the bodies of The Rock and Kevin Hart, respectively. The trailer also shows off the return of Nick Jonas and the arrival of series newcomer Awkwafina.

Sony Considering Developer Acquisitions For PlayStation Worldwide Studios

The Last of Us Part II

Over the past two years, Microsoft has become downright addicted to buying up studios. The Xbox Game Studios were trying to patch a whole in what was perceived as a weak first-party portfolio, which kind of left Nintendo and Sony, which already had strong first-party software, to do their own thing. Now, according to PlayStation president Jim Ryan, that might change as Sony looks to beef up its software development in preparation for next-gen.

In an interview with Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Jim Ryan told the outlet that they are looking into developer acquisitions in the future. Specifically, Ryan said that PlayStation is looking at developers fairly new to the industry to join them, as PlayStation already has lots of money and lots of experience under their belt.

Ryan didn't tip his hand on which developers they were looking for, but I imagine that statement about experience is to show a contrast to Microsoft picking up established developers like Double Fine. It seems unlikely Sony is interested on acquiring, say, Capcom or Konami or anything like that.

Which smaller studios do you think would be a good fit for the PlayStation brand? Let us know in the comments below.

The Sports Desk – Perfect Team Takes Out Of The Park Baseball 20 Into A New Era

$
0
0

Last year, Out of the Park Baseball added a free fantasy-based card mode called Perfect Team to its simulation offerings, and not only has the mode taken off, but it's just the start. Out of the Park Developments has added collection missions, and tournaments are planned before the end of the year.

I talked to OTTP community manager Kris Jardine and chief marketing officer Rich Grisham about how fans are finding ways to win in the mode, and what's next for the mode and the company.

Where any changes made going from Perfect Team in OOTP 19 to 20?
Kris Jardine: We took a lot of the feedback that we got in that initial Perfect Team 19 in terms of player ratings and in-game strategies, and we were able to make some improvements in that regard. So we were able to tinker the way that players were rated, especially in terms of older historical players and trying to use their defensive ratings in a way that more reflected how the game was played at that time. And just some general changes to the way that the A.I. operates. And we introduced the opener/follower scenario that has kind of taken the baseball world by storm.

Have you seen any particular strategy or lineup that you were amused by or thought, “That’s a pretty novel strategy – I hadn’t thought of that”?
Jardine: I'm always impressed by teams built completely on speed. I've seen teams that they will amass 600-700 stolen bases over the course of a 162-game season and make it work. Me, when I think baseball I think, “Okay, I want someone who hits for a good average, who can hit with some pop, plays acceptable defense…” Then you see these guys like, “No, I'm going to try to Billy Hamilton, Rickey Henderson, and Lou Brock, and I don't care if they drop 1,000 fly balls or hit .110.” I just don't conceivably understand how that could be successful. But I've seen people do it, and I've seen them make it work. It’s definitely not for me, but it is one that I always look at and am like, “How does that equate to 105 wins?”

Is there any particular meta players are using in Perfect Team you’ve had to adjust to?
Jardine: There's always going to be a meta. Me personally, I don't really like the term “meta” in the way a lot of people use it. Sure, I get it, you know, there's always a funnel-based way to win, right? There's only so many teams that can win, and it's all the teams that get to the bottom of the funnel first, and sometimes there's more effective ways to get there.

If you had to say what the meta of Perfect Team has been, I would generally say it tends to be toward starting pitching. If you look over the course of the history of baseball, I think you would probably say that more often than not elite starting pitching in real life wins out versus elite hitting. There are plenty of examples of that over the course of history, especially in some of the pitcher-dominated eras like the mid- to late-’60s. You see that from time to time in Perfect Team, especially when you get to the upper tiers where you see people trotting out some of the Walter Johnson cards, some of the Pedro Martínez cards…. There's a peak Curt Schilling card out there, which is “God Tier” here in the community....

We haven't done anything to combat that – that's baseball. We provide the cards – how people choose to assemble their teams to win is totally up to them. We haven't made any sort of groundbreaking changes since 20 has come out to change how the A.I. operates, to buff hitting in any way. We just let it naturally flow through the course of baseball. And yeah, if that's how people choose to build their teams, going elite starting pitching first, so be it. It's up to the other 29 teams in your Perfect Team league to figure out how to beat you.

Is the mobile version of the game you’re working on – OTTP Go – tied directly to your PC-based Perfect Team? Or is it a mobile version of the regular OOTP sim game?
Rich Grisham: It's yes to both. We are building OTTP Go from the ground up...so you'll be able to play Out of the Park Baseball in a traditional way, and you'll also be able to play and participate in Perfect Team. So [it has] the Auction House, ripping packs, managing your team, checking the scores, and all of that stuff.

So to clarify, will you use your existing Perfect Team save in OTTP Go?
Grisham: The Perfect Team will be completely the same, so it'll be your Perfect Team whether you're on your PC or whether you're on your mobile device. There is a plan for the traditional Out of the Park experience to also be you know – basically, call it cross-platform play. That's the plan and the goal, and it just comes down to can we execute that in time for the release? Or will that be post-release?

Can you give any more details about the tournaments scheduled for Perfect Team by the end of the year? Will they be user-generated, what's the format, etc.?
Jardine: Initially the plan is that people will be able to participate in three tournaments at a time. The tournaments are going to be all generated by us through the servers [Kris says user-created tournaments are on the wishlist – Ed.], and they are going to cover an absolute wide variety of potential possibilities. So, for example, we may have a tournament where you can only use all bronze-level cards limited to 32 teams, double elimination. We may have another tournament that is completely open – no roster restrictions, the first 64 teams that get in there and fill it up, single-elimination, and away you go. We may have a giant 256-team, Diamond and Perfect card-only tournament. The possibilities are really endless.

If we start ignoring the traditional franchise mode and pivot toward this Perfect Team-only focus, we will lose everything that got us here." – Rich Grisham, Out of the Park Developments CMO

Are there any third-party database websites to track players and auction house data, and do you have to okay that first?
Jardine: Is there a point where we're going to have the API available and allow third-parties to make you a FUTbin, or a MUThead, or a Daddy Leagues sort of site that can aggregate auction house information, identify trends, and help people build a database of cards? That's not for me to decide. I think it would make a lot of people very happy. I think it's something that we have had discussions about and will continue to have in the future. Ultimately, if it happens it's because we as a team have decided that this is the best method for us to grow the game for the community.

What do you say to fans who worry that because Perfect Team makes money for the series, OOTP’s focus is going to skew in that direction to the detriment of the other modes?
Grisham: I say two things. Number one, don't worry about that. Number two, don't listen to me say, “Don't worry about it.” Just watch what we make. We let Out of the Park Baseball speak for itself. We're going to continue to make the core game better, we're going to introduce new things. Baseball's changing at such a rapid pace. The three true outcomes, launch angles, exit velocities, openers/closers...We cannot ignore that because that's when we will lose fans. If we start ignoring the traditional franchise mode and pivot toward this Perfect Team-only focus, we will lose everything that got us here.

Has anyone done any of the really hard collection missions yet?
Jardine: There's two collection missions I could think of right off the top of my head without having the game open in front of me that are particularly difficult. One is we have what I like to call tiered missions. So basically, we have a Chicago White Sox collection of missions, that in order to receive the very top reward, which is a perfect Ed Walsh – a great Chicago White Sox pitcher way, way back in the day – you have to complete a subset of five other collection missions collecting all kinds of players from different eras of the Chicago White Sox. It is incredibly difficult to do, and a lot of those cards are incredibly rare and incredibly expensive. But we have seen it done a few times. That is one that a lot of people on the channels I monitor are really, really psyched and really pushing toward and hoping to someday complete the Ed Walsh collection.

The other mission that has been incredibly tough and time-consuming is we have a subset of missions of collecting all the World Series champion cards for every year of the 1980s. Then you can turn that in for a World Series champions of the ‘80s mission. The last time I had checked, which this is probably four or five days ago, that mission had yet to be completed. When we launched, we had 119 missions. Within about six or seven hours we had some people who had completed upwards of 90 of them, like right off the bat. But yeah, we still have a couple of those outliers that are not completed yet. I expect because we plan on supporting collections with content as well – we do plan on releasing periodical updates with new collections into the game – that we will be introducing some pretty tough ones. Kind of in that same vein as the White Sox. We plan on doing that for all the teams as well.

Do you plan to backfill players’ pictures for cards already out that don’t have them?
Grisham: Never say never. It's certainly something that we would love to have, and plenty of our community would love to have, but it's not something that we have on our short-term roadmap.

What are your thoughts on the different legislation against loot boxes being formulated right now worldwide?
Grisham: Certainly, if post-sale monetization becomes illegal, then that would definitely be a bummer. But, you know, if that happens, it happens. We're still gonna make Out of the Park Baseball, right? That's what we do. We're certainly monitoring it, but we're not ready to start running around flailing with our hands up in the air. Because, again, I think our community knows what we're about. We're open, we're honest, and we respect our fans and our players. We're not out to get them. There's this attitude that I think in some parts of the world that companies are out to get people. We're not out to get anybody.

Twitch Prime Meets Rockstar Games For The First Time

Grand Theft Auto Online makes a lot of money. While there's not a lot of numbers behind Red Dead Online, as it's still surprisingly nascent, it's safe to say it probably does pretty well for itself. Grand Theft Auto Online in particular does surprisingly well as a streaming game, so it makes sense to assume that there's a pretty big middle-ground in the Venn diagram of Rockstar Online fans and Twitch viewers, which is why Twitch Prime is teaming up with Rockstar to give away some goodies.

This is mostly notable because this is the first time for Rockstar and Twitch to partner up. Here's what you'll get from being a subscriber and linking your two accounts.

Grand Theft Auto Online Benefits:

  • GTA$1,250,000
  • Bonus GTA$ on all purchases of Shark Cash Cards

Red Dead Online Benefits:

  • RDO$300 and the Superior Ammo Bundle featuring:
    • 30 Dynamite Arrows
    • 60 Incendiary Buckshot Ammo
    • 30 Volatile Fire Bottles
    •  200 Express Ammo for: Pistol, Revolver, Repeater & Rifle
  •  Extra Gold Bars on purchases of Gold Bars Packs

While this is the first time for both these games, Rockstar says to expect to see more Twitch Prime-exclusive content for these games in the future, which follows along with other titles like Apex Legends and Overwatch, which tend to offer new items every few months.

If you have a Twitch Prime account, or an Amazon Prime account, you can get yourself some goodies for your cowboys or heist crew.

Dr Disrespect Explains Bathroom Incident On Behalf Of His Brand

A few weeks ago, streamer Dr Disrespect, who is known for exactly what it says on tin but probably with less medical knowledge than would assume with that title, held a stream walking around the E3 show floor. He went a bit too far beyond the E3 show floor, ended up in a public bathroom with the stream on, got banned from both E3 and Twitch, and may have committed some misdemeanors in the process.

The ban, at very least, ended after about two weeks. In the time he was banned, the streamer spent a lot of time on social media hyping up his return and joking about the ban, but notably did not actually apologize for streaming in a public restroom with minors in it. He instead took to Twitter today as Guy Beahm himself rather than as Dr Disrespect.

"I'd like to talk about Dr Disrespect's Twitch ban from E3," the tweet said, posting a link to a longer message. "This was my first IRL stream as the Doc and if it's not obvious by now, one of the things I try to stay true with is authenticity. Real life personas are so difficult to pull off, especially in today's society. Doc is edgy, highly opinionated, cocky, etc. and that certainly adds to the difficulty in staying authentic without offending anyone on a deeper, personal level."

Beahm went on to explain that he wasn't thinking about the larger repercussions of what he was doing. He specifically apologized on behalf of the Dr Disrespect brand and reasoned that the effective problem was that he was too in-character and lost sight of things like legalities.

Dr Disrespect is currently back on Twitch.

Marvel To Show New Avengers Video Game Content At San Diego Comic-Con

When Marvel's Avengers was shown at E3 last month, fans were kind of expecting a little more than what was shown at Square Enix's E3 conference. While the publisher went into things like how the voice actors feel about the characters, very little was shown about the actual gameplay, and had to mostly be gleamed from behind-closed-doors demos and glowing interviews. Now it seems like we'll get our next bit of info from San Diego Comic-Con in July.

Marvel has a game panel on July 18, hosted by professional loudmouth Greg Miller, though I feel like I'm stretching the definition of professional even if loudmouth was their description. The panel summary says that it will show new content for Avengers, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Iron Man VR, and promises surprises as well. Miller will be joined by special guests, which presumably means some developers from those games, and Bill Rosemann, who is vice president and creative director at Marvel Games.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 releases the next day on Switch, so we'll likely get the very last character reveals or the DLC characters, which got an announcement of X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Marvel Knights at E3. Iron Man VR is scheduled for PlayStation VR later this year. Marvel's Avengers will land on May 15 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC.

Publisher Behind Horror Game Devotion Has Had Its Business License Revoked In China

Some months back, Taiwanese horror game Devotion briefly came out on Steam before quickly being pulled from sale. While the developers said this only because they wanted to fix some glitches, it was assumed that Red Candle Games did so to remove a poster that made fun of Chinese president Xi Jinping, relating him to Winnie the Pooh and calling him a moron. The game, which was taken down at the end of February, never came back on sale and the developers have not publicly commented on Devotion since.

At the time, the game's publishers Indievent and Winking Entertainment abandoned the title and terminated their contracts for console versions of Devotion. Today, the Chinese government revoked Indievent's business license within the country.

While China did not explicitly say their reasoning for this was because of Devotion, they did not give reasoning at all beyond saying that Indievent violated "relevant laws," according to Another Indie founder Iain Garner via PCGamesN. The government would have a similar amount of leverage over Winking Entertainment, should they choose to exercise it.

It is unknown if Devotion will ever return to sale.
